Hi Everyone!
Welcome to my blog. I am hoping to share and get ideas about school book clubs. Please share any thoughts and ideas you may have on the topic of school book clubs.

  1. I'm thinking of starting a book club with my 4th graders next year. I would like to use the book "The Jacket" by Andrew Clements. Anyone ever used this book with 4th graders?

  2. We used it at Magrill with 4th grade. The Reading Specialist really liked it. If you want more information about it, I'm sure she would share.

  3. I'm glad to hear that it worked well at Magrill. I'll contact your Reading Specialist to find out more.

  4. Rachel -- How did you handle the large number of students you had with your book clubs? Did you get all your books back? If not, what percentage would you guess?

  5. TXLibraryGal,

I got all of my books back. The teachers were great in helping me with that. My first book club at 44 participants so that was pretty easy to handle. The last one I did had over 100 and although the students were well behaved and participation was good, I think next time I am going to do smaller groups. I am going to hand out the books (I have 30) and then when the first 30 come in I will meet with that first group, then I will meet with the second group and so on. I feel that some of the shy kids will participate more if there are less students in each group. I will post after I try it this next time.

  6. So, I'm thinking of formalizing the book club at my HS. All the kids who were involved last year graduated! And, at some schools it's an actual club. I'm planning on setting it up like that at my school. Working out the kinks this year and then really getting it off the ground for next year. Will be using a wiki (vs a blog -- I think) to allow student members to control marketing, etc. What do you think?
